Who's who

Characters of the Rana universe

The people, allies and adversaries who turn missions into legends.

The man himself

Masud Rana: agent MR-9

Masud Rana is a former major of the Bangladesh Army who now runs human-intelligence operations as agent MR-9 at the Bangladesh Counter Intelligence (BCI) in Dhaka, under the command of Major General Rahat Khan. To the outside world he is simply the head of the Rana Agency, a private investigation firm that doubles as his cover.

His backstory is unusually rich for a pulp hero. Born in Dhaka and orphaned young, he was educated abroad, trained as a soldier, and fought in the Bangladesh Liberation War before intelligence work claimed him. He is fearless, solitary and relentlessly capable, fluent in many languages and at home anywhere in the world, a hero consciously written as a Bengali answer to Ian Fleming's James Bond. What kept readers coming back for decades, though, was the human underneath the action: a man who always, somehow, finds his way home.

Major General Rahat Khan

The retired Major General who heads the Bangladesh Counter Intelligence and is Rana's direct superior. He sends Rana into the fire, and carries the weight of every mission that comes back.

Sohana Chowdhury

One of the recurring figures who move through Rana's world across the series. A name long-time readers know well.

The Rana Agency

Rana's private investigation firm, and the public face that hides his real work. The agency is the cover story that lets MR-9 operate in the open.

Saul Shipping Corporation

A multinational shipping company that serves as another of Rana's fronts, giving him reason and reach to be anywhere in the world.

Kuasha

The anti-hero of the sister series, and a crossover into Rana's world in Shei Kuasha. Not quite villain, not quite hero, always fascinating.

A cast of hundreds

Across 470+ missions Rana has met allies, rivals, handlers and adversaries the world over. This is the core; the rest is a lifetime of reading.

Character details here follow what is documented about the series. Some recurring names are known to fans but thinly recorded in reliable sources; where that is so, we keep it general rather than invent.
